Nurse coaching is a skilled, purposeful, results-oriented and structured client interaction that is provided by Registered Nurses for the purpose of promoting achievement of client goals. (Dossey, Hess, et. al, 2013) Nurse coaches promote and facilitate the growth, healing and wellbeing of the whole person by using coaching principles and healing modalities that integrate body-mind-emotion-spirit-environment. Nurse coaches are required to have several years of nursing education and experience as a foundation to developing their coaching skills. Nurse coaches integrate coaching competencies into any setting and specialty area of nursing practice to facilitate a process of change or development that assists individuals and/or groups to actualize their potential. The nurse coaching process involves six simultaneously occurring steps: Establish the relationship and assess client’s readiness for change. Understanding food and using food to nourish your body and mind. What you eat and being aware of how it makes you feel is priory to a healthy lifestyle. Unresolved health concerns can be greatly related to the foods you are consuming. Understand how food is related to not only weight, but also mood, hormones , inflammation, immunity, cognition and more. Knowledge is power. Lets work together to formulate a nutrition plan that is right for you.
Being present in the current moment is not something we are accustomed to . We are busy rushing around doing ten things at a time. This is often why we misplace our keys or question if we fed the cat. By opening our minds, relaxing our thoughts and surrendering to any outcomes we learn over time to be mindful of where we are physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. This is where healing truly takes place. Mindfulness practice does not take much time and you can practice this technique anywhere. Let me teach you how to open your heart, relax and release the "brain fog" we are so used to feeling.
Mindfulness and meditation go hand in hand to create a beautiful sense of peace and harmony to mind, body and soul. Mediation is a state of calmness incorporating therapeutic breathing. One can also include aromatherapy and guided imagery to your meditation practice. Some caregivers use this meditative state as time to enhance prayer connection. Meditation sessions can last 5 minutes to 45 minutes and allows one to relax with whatever time is received. I will also be holding special meditation sessions incorporating sound vibrations using crystal bowls.
Body scan with guided imagery will allow you to find who you are and what you need by obtaining a sense of calmness and rest. Guided imagery allows the caregiver to escape to a favorite sanctuary such as the beach, on a walk or resting under your favorite tree. Here you can begin to feel and release your tension starting at your crown and scanning your entire body to your core. It is important to complete body scan once or twice weekly to feel where you are out of alignment with tension. You can envision healing, massage, and the blood flowing movement that can encompass the body for healing itself. Close your eyes, complete a body scan and then envision al beautiful light, feeling happy, carefree and joyful thoughts. This practice will calm your nervous system and promote relaxation all throughout your body.
Gentle stretch with yoga techniques are used to release tension and stress to our muscles that so quickly tighten up. Yoga can be incorporated with intentional movements and enhance flexibility and strength. One must allow themselves to fully understand the importance of awareness, slow and intentional movement with gentle stretching all awhile practicing therapeutic breathing. Gentle stretch and chair yoga are an importance enhancement to health and wellness as one becomes more flexible this allows a decrease in risk of injury or fall. Yoga is wonderful strength building tool.
Aromatherapy allows ones senses to experience relaxation, calmness and provides a way to decompress whether using in a bath or simply massaging on the skin.
Therapeutic Journaling for caregivers have shown to increase their well-being by writing of their challenging circumstances and allow one to became increasingly optimistic. Informal writing in a journal helps caregivers manage chronic stress and increase effective coping. Therapeutic journaling is a healthy outlet that frees the caregiver of feelings that will otherwise tie then down to heaviness and lack of control. Journaling is a way to increase emotional expressions.
Caregiver can provide simple touch techniques to comfort and support their loved ones. Gentle touch method often times can be used with aromatherapy to relieve pain and other symptoms to provide comfort. This technique allows loved ones the importance of being considered to be viewed as a whole person and important to receiving any form of positive, gentle touch from caregivers.
The practice of therapeutic breathing is a benefit that will stay with you even when you are not aware. Breathing exercises can help one find peace and rest. This practice is a thoughtful exercise that allows the slow and controlled flow of oxygen to enter the body and released in a fashion of letting go. The results demonstrated that a five minute breathing exercise reduces stress in patients and their caregivers allowing for a clear mind and relaxed state. Research has shown that the use of slow, mindful breathing can decrease stress in any frustrating, fearful situation and allow constructive, open minded conversations and healthy decision making.

Grief comes in many waves and looks different for all. Patients and caregivers may start to grieve the changes in their life that they were not expecting. How often should I schedule a holistic nurse coaching session?
Depending on your individual needs one can schedule on a weekly, biweekly, monthly or quarterly basis. Each person has a unique journey and personal goals.
